DIY Fabric Pacifier Clips

The reason I started making pacifier clips was because of my every growing fabric stash and remnants. I have a ton of extra fabric remnants and I hate throwing away fabric! I started making and selling fabric pacifier clips in my Etsy shop. They are super easy to make and take about 15 minutes from start to finish. If you are looking to sell handmade goods, pacifier clips are an easy way to start.

Where to Buy Pacifier Clip Materials

These enamel pacifier clips can be purchased at Amazon.com. There is a huge selection there. Another resource for clip hardware that I like is ilikebigbuttons.com. They have an extensive collection of various hardware and you can buy 1 or many clips in the specific color that you want. Just make sure that the clip opening where the fabric goes through measures 1″.

The interfacing and elastic I usually buy from Joann’s. I commonly buy Pellon Shape Flex 101 for most of my sewing projects and have lots of remnants. Joann’s also stocks small packages of elastic that is perfect for this project and you can use a coupon for extra savings. 🙂

Step 1: Attach the elastic to the interfacing remnant.

Fold the elastic in half and place the ends in the middle of the interfacing. Do not place the elastic on the adhesive side of the interfacing. Overlap the ends to create a loop. Attach the ends to the piece of interfacing using a zigzag stitch.

I like to use the interfacing to give the elastic extra security. It is strong enough so that a small child can not pull the elastic free and create a choking hazard.

Step 2: Prepare the fabric.

Next, Take the fabric remnant and fold the short ends of fabric under ¼” toward the wrong side. Press with a hot iron.

Fold fabric in half along the length and press wrong sides facing. This will create a fold line to use as a guide.

Open fabric piece with wrong side facing up. Use crease as a guide to fold edges into the middle.

Then, fold both sides toward the center using the fold line as a guide. Press with a hot iron.

Lastly, cut the extra fabric from the folded edge to the center on both ends. This will create a “V”. This helps remove the bulk from the fold and the edges will be nice and crisp when folded.

Step 3: Stitch the fabric and add hardware.

Place the elastic attached to the interfacing on the inside of the fabric near the top edge. Iron the interfacing until it has adhered to the fabric. This will give an extra layer of security to the elastic.

Then fold both sides together on the crease line encasing all the raw edges.

Next, topstitch 1/8″ around all sides. This will encase all the raw edges.

Lastly, fold the end without the elastic through a pacifier clip. Stitch across the bottom. Use the previous stitches as a guide. See the white stitch line that has been enhanced in the photo.

DIY Ribbon Pacifier Clips with Snaps

Materials List

  • 12 inches of 1″ ribbon
  • 2 – 20mm KAM snaps
  • 1″ pacifier clip hardware

For the ribbon, make sure that you buy high quality ribbon that doesn’t easily fray or have a heat pressed design on it. Babies will put the ribbon in their mouth so try to avoid anything that you wouldn’t want them to eat 🙂

I love this KAM snap tool from Amazon. The floral pattern is really sweet. The KAM snaps come in a variety of sizes and colors. I used these same snaps for my bandana bib pattern which you can find in my shop and the sew along here.

How To Instructions

First, you should heat seal the ends of the ribbon or use anti-Fray material. To heat seal the ends, simply light a candle and hold the ribbon close to the fire. This will melt the end and prevent fraying.

Next, position the KAM snaps at 1/2″ and 2 1/2″ from one edge. Make sure that the flat caps are on the same side of the ribbon. The male and female portion are on the same sides of the ribbon.
