Bias tape is an incredibly useful product. I have bought the pre-made packaging for years to finish seams. The only problem with pre-made bias tape is that you are limited in color options and sizes. I didn’t realize all the creative uses of this versatile product until I started making my own. Making your own bias tape is incredibly easy if you have the right tools. It is also a great way to use fabric remnants. There are a ton of creative uses for bias tape besides binding seams. Check out some of the creative uses I have found for bias tape below.
How to make your own bias tape
If you want to make your own, I found an easy to follow tutorial from makeit-loveit.com. Once you have it all cut in a continuous loop, use a bias tape maker to complete the process. I own the one pictured below and LOVE it! (affiliate link)
Creative Uses for Bias Tape No. 1 – Making pattern weights
I recently wrote a guest post for diydanielle.com where I used bias tape to make my own pattern weights from fabric remnants. You can find all the instructions on her website.
No. 2 – Use as a Facing
Use as a facing – This is a great use for bias tape as well. I found this tutorial at blueprints for sewing. What a great way to finish the seam without having to cut a facing. It also decreases bulk and wearability of the garment.

No. 3 – Decorative Edges
Decorative Edges – I used bias tape to finish the raw edge and add a decorative touch to this diaper stacker. This diaper stacker pattern is available for purchase in my shop. Just click the link below.
I made this beautiful shirt for my daughter’s birthday. The shirt only has a simple front and back piece – no facings. I finished the bottom with bias tape and added bias tape for the straps. By using this method, I did not have to finish the armhole sleeves. The bias binding is both decorative and functional! Win!
No. 5 – Finishing the Seams (maybe the least creative 🙂
Finishing seams – I made my own bias binding to finish the seams in this raincoat. It takes a homemade item to hand crafted.

Thank you for the comment. Bias tape can also be used to finish a hem on the bottom of a dress or sleeves.
