Why I Started Sewing Pacifier Clips
Like many moms, I had a growing stash of fabric scraps that I couldn’t bring myself to throw away. Pacifier clips turned out to be the perfect scrap-busting project! They’re quick to make, don’t require much fabric, and make great gifts or shop items.
In fact, I started selling pacifier clips in my Etsy shop, and they’ve always been a customer favorite. If you’re new to sewing or interested in selling handmade goods, pacifier clips are a fantastic beginner project to build your confidence (and maybe even a little side income).
DIY Fabric Pacifier Clips — Supplies You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need for one fabric pacifier clip
- 2” x ½” piece of iron on interfacing (I recommend Pellon Shape Flex 101)
- 1/8″ elastic – 5″ piece
- Fabric Remnant- 4″ x 9″
- 1″ pacifier clip hardware (I sell enamel pacifier clips in my Etsy shop)
👉 Pro Tip: Always make sure your hardware opening measures 1″. That ensures the fabric fits securely, no matter where you purchase clips.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions
Step 1: Attach the Elastic
- Fold the elastic in half and place the ends in the center of your interfacing (non-adhesive side).
- Overlap ends to create a loop.
- Zigzag stitch across the ends to secure.
💡 The interfacing gives extra strength so the elastic won’t pull loose—a key safety feature for little ones.

Step 2: Prep Your Fabric
- Fold short ends of fabric under ¼” and press.
- Fold fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press to mark a crease.
- Open fabric and fold raw edges to the center crease, press.
- Fold again along crease so all raw edges are enclosed.
- Trim ends into a “V” shape to reduce bulk.

Step 3: Stitch & Add Hardware
- Place the elastic + interfacing at the top edge inside the fabric. Fuse interfacing to secure.
- Fold fabric along the crease to enclose raw edges.
- Topstitch ⅛” around all edges for a clean finish.
- Slide opposite end through pacifier clip hardware, fold over, and stitch securely.
✨ And just like that—you’ve sewn your first pacifier clip!

DIY Ribbon Pacifier Clip with Snaps (No-Sew Option!)
Prefer ribbon over fabric? This version is just as easy.
Supplies:
- 12” of 1″ high-quality ribbon
- 2 x 20 mm KAM snaps (I use this KAM starter set)
- 1″ pacifier clip hardware
For the ribbon, make sure that you buy high quality ribbon that doesn’t easily fray or have a heat pressed design on it. Babies will put the ribbon in their mouth so try to avoid anything that you wouldn’t want them to eat 🙂
Instructions:
- Heat-seal ribbon ends with a lighter (or use anti-fray).
- Add KAM snaps ½” and 2 ½” from one end.
- Thread opposite end through hardware and stitch closed.
